Eudunda the “Valley of Hidden Treasures” is a welcoming rural town located in the Mid North of South Australia, that offers a blend of historic charm, agricultural heritage, and a strong sense of community. Walking our main street lined by historic buildings and vine-covered verandas, you’ll glimpse our slower-paced country lifestyle shaped by generations of farming families.
Eudunda lies on natural springs that made the area an important stopover for early drovers moving livestock to markets and this is reflected in the town’s name derived from the Ngadjuri word “eudundacowi,” meaning “water from the ground”. We were officially established in 1870 by John Henry Hannan by mostly German Lutherans. Our German heritage continues to shape our identity, visible in family names, architecture, and community traditions. The town is also notable as the birthplace of acclaimed Australian author Colin Thiele, whose stories, such as Sun on the Stubble, were inspired by his childhood in the region.
After the arrival of the railway in 1878, Eudunda quickly developed into a thriving service centre for agriculture and stock trading. Businesses, mills, and co-operative enterprises flourished, including the influential Eudunda Farmers’ Co-operative Society. Many of these important pieces of our heritage are memorialised throughout the area.
You can explore local history by visiting our Eudunda Family Heritage Gallery, which preserves photographs, artefacts, and stories from the district’s past. Information on self guided tours can be found here and also from our Visitor Information Outlet across the road.
